2018 Program unveiling

Press release - For immediate release - March 13, 2018 Go to the summit...of guitars!

Rouyn-Noranda, March 13, 2018 — The Festival des Guitares du Monde en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (FGMAT) is right on the mark again for a 14th spring. The team has composed for you an edition full of depth and authenticity, passion and intensity. In short, warm and high in quality.

From May 26 to June 2 will be held the grand rendez-vous, where artists with multiple talents will meet at the summit (the "north") in Rouyn-Noranda. Goldcorp – Éléonore, a loyal collaborator is once again partnering with FGMAT and SiriusXM (as a co-presenter partner) inviting you to 19 main shows in theaters and more than 60 performances and musical activities in parallel. There will certainly be something for everyone! This musical trip around the globe will make you see, or rather hear, all the colors: rock, blues, folk, soul, gospel, country, pop, gypsy, world music, fingerstyle, slide guitar...

Last January, we had just announced the headliner of this 14th edition, the sublime guitarist Joe Satriani, whose tickets sold in record time, forty minutes! Then, Organizers announced a second presentation! A first in the entire history of the festival. This instrumental rock master, inspiring for his peers, was, in turn, strongly influenced by one of the greatest: Jimi Hendrix. Not surprised to learn that the latter has inspired several generations of guitarists, we were to discover that he had this in common with another distinguished guest of this 14th edition: Jack Broadbent. Beginning his career by singing in the streets, he is quickly identified as the best bluesman of his time and one of the best slide guitar players in the world, very promising! The virtuoso Robert Randolph accompanied by his Family Band, whose unique talent in pedal steel guitar is in turn inspiring remarkable guitarists including Eric Clapton. Randolph, who will close this 14th program, has been named one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time alongside Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix ... And now, the loop is complete!

Continuing in this line of blues and gospel sounds, we immediately think of Ruthie Foster. Equipped with a powerful and sensitive voice with a magnificent resonance. It is compared to the greatest such as Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald. A reappearance to Abitibi soil, but this time accompanied by her musicians.

Rare are the musicians who can claim to have played with the great Bonnie Raitt. Well, she shares this common point with another guest artist: Mia Dyson, a guitarist with extraordinary magnetism and one of the top 25 best Australian guitarists of all time. Her repertoire combines blues-rock and roots.

Following this musical vein, we also discover Valerie June, American singer and multi-instrumentalist, who presents music mixing folk, country and gospel. Her music is, without a doubt, extraordinarily warm, just like her voice and her presence on stage. In the country genre, more "pop" this time, the Canadian Lindsay Ell, who started playing guitar at the age of 8, is a real rising star that you must discover if you don’t already know her. She has played alongside great country artists, including Keith Urban and Brad Paisley.

To conclude this feminine portion of the program, all will be happy to find the four dynamic musicians and singers of Christine Tassan et Les Imposteures, true pioneers in a field usually reserved for men: gypsy jazz. An evening between "Felix and Django" not to be missed!

The more "technical" guitar lovers will be served with three fingerstyle specialists. Ewan Dobson, a young viral hit Canadian on the Internet, is an artist of exceptional technical virtuosity who plays the guitar fingerstyle wonderfully like his sidekick Luca Stricagnoli, another instrumental artist "with millions of views"! This Italian bypasses the normal limits of the acoustic guitar and adapts it to any musical genre, thus performing breathtaking prowess. Then Jamie Dupuis, born in Sudbury, Ontario, was able to create his own style with his intricate guitar techniques and harp guitar arrangements.

The harp guitar will make way for the electric harp for the first time in our program, thanks to the very impressive Edmar Castañeda. A true virtuoso of the harp, this Colombian of origin introduced the harp into jazz by giving it a place of choice. In this series " world music", the guitarist and multi-instrumentalist with very precise techniques, Yiannis Kapoulas also makes us the honor of his presence. Having learned to play bouzouki at the age of only 4, his music incorporates sounds and instruments from around the world that gives him something "wonderfully unique and fresh".

Eight French-Canadian artists will also have a place in this program. First, two formations from the region will be presented this year. Philippe B who accustomed us to more intimate presences on stage will this time offer a show tailored to the FGMAT where he will be accompanied by a large orchestra: Philippe B & The Alphabet, something that sounds Philippe B (folk, pop classic), but a sound amplified and enriched by a horde of instruments, without neglecting to put in the foreground his first instrument: the guitar. A more rock sound, but never like that of the Lubik band: solid French rock with its brutal and muscular sound; a music both exploded and mastered. Still in rock, but rock'n roll influences going even in the retro-trash-candy this time, the Montreal group Cherry Chérie. Then Daran French pop-rock style who has distinguished himself among others by the quality of his voice and of his guitar that make him a unique artist of its kind.

In a completely unique way, there is Elliot Maginot with the mesmerizing voice, which transports us in a folk and a unique dream pop. Accompanying himself mainly on the guitar, he sometimes surprises his audience by settling on the piano. And finally, the last, but not least, Thierry Bégin-L., Quebec classical guitarist internationally recognized for his deep interpretations and his prestigious musicality. His experience and soul merge to make this guitarist one of the best of his generation.

So much talent per foot square is possible, but the Festival des Guitares du Monde can not do it alone. It takes music lovers, people who believe in this project and support it: the holders of "passionate" passports, festival-goers, volunteers, public and private partners and for the last 5 years, Goldcorp – Éléonore as official partner of the event.
