Rouyn-Noranda, March 14, 2017 – Le Festival des Guitares du Monde en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (FGMAT) that unfolds every spring offers an exceptional range of musical moments where talent reigns! This year, the festival organising team prepared you a refreshing and eclectic edition, inspired by virtuosity, discovery and a hint of nostalgia.
From May 27 to June 3, great musicians from all walks of life will converge in Rouyn-Noranda for the 13th edition. Presented by Goldcorp – Eleonore, the FGMAT invites you to 17 main shows, along with more than 60 musical performances that will take place during this exceptional event. The variety of styles proposed during 8 days of festivities will amaze everyone as there will be a mix of rock sound, jazz successes, rhythm and blues, aboriginal chants, world music, finger style, contemporary swing as well as grand classic music.
On February 20th, the FGMAT announced a grand premier: the kickoff will be given by the legendary guitarist and original member of the G3, Eric Johnson. A unique chance to see this virtuoso and his 'electric band' in Rouyn-Noranda! The announcement also confirmed the presence of the charismatic guitarist of Greek origin, Pavlo. His return to Abitibi soil is eagerly awaited by festival-goers. They will most certainly rejoice, because in addition to his band, Pavlo will be accompanied by a special guest, the guitarist and tenor Remigio Pereira. An enchanting evening under the charm of the Mediterranean.
Great surprises are waiting for festival-goers. Indeed, all will be delighted by the extent of the talent of the Serb Ana Popovic: 'phenomenon of the blues', the feminine version of Jimi Hendrix'. In truth, Ana does not need to be compared to legends to make her mark. Her style, her charisma on stage and her voice leave no one indifferent. Ana’s recipe: electric blues, tint of Funk, soul and jazz. Her band will join her, for an energetic evening!
The Canadian Rock Icon, Kim Mitchell will also be with us this year. Well recognized not only as a solo artist but also as the leader of the Max Webster band, Kim is a respected composer, guitarist, and singer. He wrote and recorded many classic Canadian hits such as « Go for Soda », « Rock N Roll Duty » « Patio Lanterns » and « I’m a Wild Party ». 2
The multi-instrumental Montreal band, Bellflower, have a unique, detailed, rich and powerful sound. The octet offers an enveloping and rhythmic music described as orchestral pop. The vocal harmonies combined with multiple instruments make an incomparable sound. Without a doubt, one of the great discoveries of the festival!
The guitar is momentarily upstaged by the ukulele to accommodate the virtuoso and Hawaiian champion Jake Shimabukuro. His music is a mixture of jazz, rock, Hawaiian music and pop. His quick fingering and innovative technique make it one of the most exceptional ukes. He is known for his interpretations of popular songs such as While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Beatles), Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen) and Hallelujah (Cohen).
The nostalgic who are in love with Harmonium are invited to relive the magic of an era, by listening to a show with 7 outstanding musicians, Premier Ciel. They will bring to life the musical legacy of the mythical group with their show "The Heptade" authorized by Serge Fiori and under the artistic consultation of Monique Fauteux and Louis Valois. Inspired by past live recording versions of the album 'Harmonium on tour', the show consists of the entirety of the production and is followed by several titles of the 2 first albums.
The renowned international jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli will be returning to the FGMAT in a quartet formula and will interpret the great successes of the Beatles along with other pieces of his repertoire. It will be recalled that this great crooner had marked the 3rd edition of the FGMAT in 2007. You don’t want to miss this!!
The acoustic guitar will be well represented this year again, with one of the best fingerpicking guitarist, Doyle Dykes. He has developed a distinct sound – one that challenges and captivates every heart and soul. His music will touch whoever has the opportunity to hear it. We predict a starstruck evening and nothing less.
It is with pride that the FGMAT offers again a showcase for a young rising star of the acoustic guitar, Justin St-Pierre. Born in Val-d'Or, winner of the Canadian Guitar Festival, he stands out as one of the best fingerstyle players of his time. In his show, you will discover that he has a warm and enchanting voice. His new album « L’insulaire » is one of an uncommon beauty!
This classical Quartet was the first iteration of Festival des Guitares du Monde in 2005. What a chance to reconnect with one of the most prestigious ensembles of guitars in the world, the Canadian Guitar Quartet. The group, proud of an international reputation, stands by his original music and arrangements of grand classics that make their concerts an unforgettable experience.
Once again this year, programming has a special place for different cultures. This component 'around the world music' will be launched by the Quartet Kawandak, which is a meeting between Western music (jazz, blues, rock) and traditional aboriginal music in North America. An ode to nature and the beauty of sacred Metis!
Willy Rios, world traveler and Bolivian master of the charango, will offer a rich multicultural experience. Established in Montreal for more than 20 years, he made his mark and is involved in several projects of world music. Sweetness and melancholy together, happy and rhythmical tunes in this fusion of different musical styles.
Born in Senegal, and recently arrived in Canada, Ilam already has several awards, including Revelation of 2016-2017 for world music by Radio-Canada. His music is a mix of spicy rhythmic reggae, blues and afro-folk with pop and rock accents. Absolutely a new talent to discover! 3
The 8th and last day will be festive! Paul DesLauriers Band is among the best Canadian blues bands and continues to make its mark on the international scene. Recipient of several awards, including many Maple Blues Awards, the 'power trio' combines the power, subtlety and passion for the electric blues and rock. Attending a musical performance of the PDB is a unique experience. A solid performance awaits you!
The blues guitarist and harmonica player Ray Bonneville is a true troubadour. Born in Quebec, he grew up in the United States. His voice is warm and his music is inspired by his travels, including his trips to New Orleans. His songs carry a groove and a momentum of his own. Come and discover him in a trio.
For the first time, FGMAT’s closing show will be that of a « hot » danse-filled Cuban evening! Adonis Puentes & The Voice of Cuba Orchestra, a unique orchestra of 12 musicians along with the amazing voice of the Cuban-Canadian singer Adonis Puentes will present an exciting evening of Cuban rythym and jazz. What a wonderful way to celebrate the crowning of FGMAT’s 13th edition.
Consolidating as many skilled guitarists in a same place for 8 days is a mission accomplished by the FGMAT organisers, gratefully supported by "passionate" passport holders, festival-goers, volunteers and the confidence of the public and private partners. Not to mention the major support of Goldcorp – Eleonore as official partner of the event for a 4th consecutive year.
The "mélomane" Passport (passport including 7 shows of your choice and more) will be available from March 15 at the FGMAT office. A 10% discount will be offered. It is the perfect opportunity to select your shows during the pre-sale period.
