Biography

Yiannis is a unique artist in the world music category that incorporates sounds and instruments from around the world. A Hamilton (Ontario, Canada) native of Greek descent, he was raised in the multicultural Greater Toronto Area. Yiannis learned to play Bouzouki at the age of 4, an instrument offered by his father George Kapoulas (a Laouto player and vocalist in the Greek Dimotiko style). As a Jazz and Funk drummer in the high school music program, this experience was influential in developing his versatility in the Western style and working in complex time signatures. After high school, Yiannis set out on his own, leaving his home and family in Canada and moving to Greece. Performing extensively in Europe, Yiannis was influenced early on by the beauty and richness of world cultures. The experience of working with masters was key to shaping his musical career.

International award-winning multi-instrumentalist, Yiannis is an artist that is impossible to define. He continues to break new ground with his infectious blend of Ethno-Fusion, World Instrumental Music – a unique sound that runs the gamut of influences from Latin, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Jazz, Classical and Funk. With his band, The YK Project, he performs a multitude of exotic stringed instruments with agility, speed, precision and a passion that has been awing music fans at countless festivals across Canada; including his signature triple neck instruments, The E-III Series, now identified as Yiannis’ signature instruments. The three distinct, exotic sounds afforded by the E-III Electric emulate the lush and melodious tones of the Bouzouki, Saz, and Cumbus. The E-III Acoustic emulates the erotic sounds of the Tsoura, Bouzouki and Guitar.

Yannis said “Music is my soul’s nourishment. I aim to bridge and fuse musical cultures by encompassing my music with sounds and instruments from all over the World. Music does not discriminate against any race, colour or religion and neither do I. I love and respect all cultures, which is why I have embraced the musical sounds and instruments from multiple countries.”

In addition to his own projects, Yiannis works with studios developing tracks and as a session player for commercial and film production. Yiannis endeavours to continue collaborating with other artists and gaining inspiration from all cultures in the hopes of creating music that both transforms and inspires. His compositions have already gained international recognition and Yiannis has won a series of international songwriting competitions.
